United Nigeria Airlines has pledged 20 million naira to sponsor the annual Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction over the next ten years.
The airline’s Executive Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, announced the commitment after talks with the Association of Nigerian Authors, ANA.

Under the arrangement, the airline will provide two million naira annually to sustain the literary award.
Professor Okonkwo said Chinua Achebe’s legacy deserves lasting support, describing the late novelist as one of Africa’s greatest literary icons.
ANA President, Dr. Usman Akanbi, welcomed the intervention, saying the sponsorship secures the future of the prize, which has struggled with funding in recent years following the withdrawal of government support.
