The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air Embraer E170 aircraft at Benin Airport after it overran the end of Runway 05 while landing from Lagos on Thursday.
Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, Mrs. Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, said the aircraft, operating Flight 4264 with 63 passengers and five crew members on board, came to a stop safely and all occupants disembarked without injury.
She said the Bureau’s Go Team arrived at the scene within minutes to secure evidence, inspect the aircraft and runway, interview the flight crew and determine the factors that led to the occurrence.
The NCAA and other relevant airport authorities have also been notified, while the aircraft has been secured.
The Bureau says a preliminary report will be issued within 30 days, while a final report containing safety recommendations will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
Enugu Air, in a statement, reaffirmed that the safety of its passengers, crew and operations remains its highest priority, adding that the incident may result in temporary adjustments to some flight schedules.
The airline said affected passengers will be contacted directly and urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work without speculation.
